I subscribed to LeanDash, because I saw an post that interest me, titled “Should We Create ELearning on Mobile?”, which I found very interesting title related to a tool that most of us use today, the mobile phone. The post states that mobile learning has been on the rise for some time now. I know that here where I work in a DoD school, we have some our courses that are available for mobile use. We had mixed feedback from our students, but as we are younger students, whom are more technologically incline, the feedback is positive. The students have said that they appreciate the availability of learning course on mobile applications. Students are able to access courses from anywhere using smartphones and tablets. From the airport, the grocery store, home, or anywhere. However, the development of the elearning software is available on laptops, which has potential to not work proper, since it is not develop on a different platform.
I also subscribed to edudemic, one of the post that I enjoyed was “5 Ways to Engage Students”, which talks about suggestions and strategies to utilize Technology to Increasing student engagement of students and teachers. By becoming active, rather than passive learners, students will demonstrate a level of engagement, thus get students motivated and engaged. The key to learning is the active engagement between teacher and student, the result would be a wonderful classroom experience.
In education, student engagement refers to the degree of attention, curiosity, interest, optimism, and passion that students show when they are learning or being taught, which extends to the level of motivation they have to learn and progress in their education. Generally speaking, the concept of “student engagement” is predicated on the belief that learning improves when students are inquisitive, interested, or inspired, and that learning tends to suffer when students are bored, dispassionate, disaffected, or otherwise “disengaged.” I tell my students, at the beginning of class, the following Chinese Proverb:
Tell me, I’ll forget…Show me, I’ll remember…Involve me, I’ll understand”.

Enrique,
ReplyDeleteLike you, I had the same thought, that Feedly was a great app for me because it really helped me organize different blogs and news feeds and it also introduced me to more short readings that are education focused. The articles you chose seemed interesting. Especially the one about ELearning on mobile devices. You are right, the younger generation are more technologically inclined, so I think it suits them best in making their learning accessible from everywhere there is cell phone reception. I can see this being extremely beneficial for military students who so often have to drop out of a class because of training and deployment obligations, with a mobile classroom, majority of those students would be able to remain in class and finish.
Hi Enrique,
ReplyDeleteI read the article "5 Ways to Engage Students" and I think that besides the use of devices and media technology, it is very important for educators to keep content relevant. Although we have to follow mandatory subjects, there are a lot of modern relevant topics for them that we can include in the lesson plans. The article suggests some web sites to take some ideas about complementary content for them. I read some topics at NuSkoll.com, and I found some good references to work with.

Hi Enrique.
ReplyDeleteBoth of your articles are so appropriate for our current learning ways of our students. We need to use technology to engage our students in any content and in various ways. We should also take advantage of the tools that they already have and use daily, such as their mobile phones, like the article you read implied to engage them in their learning, instead of prohibiting the use of them. Great selection of articles!
Hi Enrique,
ReplyDeleteFeedly for me was very eye opening. I have used social media marketing before but i felt really disorganized with all of my sources and different websites. I think feedly will make my job a lot easier as well as organization wise.
Enrique,
ReplyDeleteI had seen the Chinese proverb: Tell me, I’ll forget…Show me, I’ll remember…Involve me, I’ll understand” and I feel it is so appropriate to use everyday at the classroom. You have inspired me to use it too by posting it somewhere in my class!! With regards to the use of technology to engage students, I totally agree that students need to be responsible too for their learning. But is easier to control the learning environment during the class time but sometimes its hard to encourage students to take control at home. Although they enjoy the use technology some students find it hard to make themselves sit down to do homework, writing or reading during the hours of after school. Hopefully the use technology, which many students enjoy more than pencil and paper will motivate them to work on assignments during the after school hours and to take advantage of the use of many resources offered by technology.
